Safety & Weather Disclaimer

Road travel estimates may exclude traffic, weather and closures. Forecast-at-arrival cards sample forecast areas and validity periods; gaps or stale data are not an all-clear. Experimental cell-awareness corridors use reflectivity and estimated motion, not validated tornado detection. Community reports and browser locations are not verified emergency information. Stop safely or have a passenger use these controls.
DopplerNav is not an official warning source. It can be late, wrong or offline. If a tornado warning, severe thunderstorm warning or flash flood warning is issued for where you are, or you believe you are in danger, act on the National Weather Service, local emergency management and your own eyes first, and call 911 in an emergency. Never wait for DopplerNav to tell you.
1. What DopplerNav is, and is not
DopplerNav brings together weather, radar, camera, traffic and aircraft data from many public sources on one map. It was built by storm chasers to improve situational awareness. It is a decision aid for people who already understand the weather they are watching. It is not:
- a warning system, an alerting service or a replacement for NOAA Weather Radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts, sirens or the broadcast media;
- a forecast, nowcast or advisory issued by a meteorologist, even where it displays products that are; or
- guaranteed to be current, complete or correct.
2. Why the data can be wrong
- Delay. Radar scans, warnings and camera frames take time to be produced, published and shown. By the time you see something on the map, it may have changed. Timestamps on the screen tell you how old a frame is; check them.
- Gaps and outages. Sources go down, slow down or return errors, and your connection may drop, especially in the field. When a feed fails, the map can look normal while showing old data. The app shows feed status; do not ignore it.
- Estimates. Storm motion lines, projected cell positions, tracks of past rotation, model output (such as HRRR) and similar products are calculations or forecasts. They are inexact, can be wrong, and are most unreliable exactly when conditions change quickly.
- Radar limits. Radar beams rise with distance, miss low-level features, can be blocked or contaminated, and cannot see everything on the ground, including tornadoes and debris in all cases.
- Cameras and positions. Camera images may be stale, stuck, moved or missing. Aircraft, your own position and road events can be inaccurate or out of date.
- Software faults. The Service is in early access and under active development. It contains bugs.
3. If you chase or travel in severe weather
- Chasing is dangerous. Tornadoes, hail, lightning, flash flooding, damaging wind, other drivers and poor road conditions can injure or kill you. You accept those risks when you choose to go toward the weather. We do not encourage or recommend that you do.
- Do not use DopplerNav while driving. Have a passenger operate it, or stop somewhere safe first. Obey all traffic laws.
- Have more than one source and a plan: official warnings, a weather radio, an escape route and shelter options, working communications and a way to charge your devices.
- Back off. No image, route or data point is worth your life or anyone else's. Do not enter a flooded road, and do not stay in the path of a tornado to get a better look.
- Respect others. Keep roads and emergency access clear, and follow the direction of law enforcement and emergency crews.
- Any routing or navigation we offer now or add later is an aid only. Roads close, change and flood. Use your own judgement about whether a road is safe.
4. At home, work or away from the weather
If you are not chasing and use DopplerNav to keep an eye on the weather, treat it the same way: as an extra view, never your only one. Know where your nearest shelter is before the storm, and take shelter when an official warning tells you to.
5. Your responsibility
You are solely responsible for your decisions, your safety and the safety of anyone with you, and for the consequences of acting or not acting on anything you see in the Service. As set out in the Terms of Use, to the fullest extent the law allows we are not liable for injury, death, loss or damage that arises from your use of, or reliance on, DopplerNav. By using the Service you confirm that you understand this.
6. Report a problem
If you see data that looks wrong, or the Service fails in a way that could mislead someone, please tell us at support@dopplernav.com. We read every report, but we cannot respond in real time and this is not an emergency contact. In an emergency call 911.
